Accepting an invite to be a legacy contact
How to accept an invitation and what to expect
If someone has added you as a legacy contact in SafeKeep, you will receive an email invitation. This means they trust you to access their documents, messages, and memories after they pass away. Accepting this role gives you secure access only when needed, and only after their death is verified.
How to accept the invitation
- Open the invitation email sent to you
- If you do not have a SafeKeep account, follow the link to create one
- You must use the same email address the invitation was sent to
- If you want to use a different email, ask the primary user to resend the invitation to the preferred address
- If you already have a SafeKeep account with that email, log in
- You will be shown the invitation and can choose to Accept or Decline
If you accept, you will be added as a legacy contact for that user. You will be able to see their name in your account under your Legacy contact section. No access to their documents or data is granted until they pass away and a takeover is requested.
How to initiate an account takeover
Once the primary user has passed away, you can begin the account takeover process:
- Log in to your SafeKeep account
- Find the user’s name under your Legacy contact list
- Click the account takeover button
- Submit the following:
- A copy of their death certificate
- Their date of birth
- Your SafeKeep password, to confirm your identity
Your request will be reviewed by SafeKeep’s internal team for validation.
What happens next
- If the request is declined, you will be notified and given the reason
- If the request is approved, you will gain access to their account
- The account will no longer be billed
- You will be notified that access is now active
You will have two options:
- Copy their data into your own account (this counts toward your storage quota)
- Download their files and information to your device
The account will remain accessible to you for 90 days. After that period, all data from their account will be permanently deleted from SafeKeep’s systems.
Becoming a legacy contact is a secure and meaningful way to help protect and carry forward the important information of someone you care about.
