Understanding two-factor authentication (2FA)

What 2FA is and why SafeKeep requires it

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is an added layer of protection that helps keep your SafeKeep account secure, even if someone knows your password. It’s a core part of our privacy and security approach, designed to protect your most sensitive documents and information.

What is two-factor authentication?

2FA means you prove your identity using:

  1. Something you know – your password
  2. Something you have – like a one-time code sent to your email or generated by an app

This two-step process significantly reduces the risk of account breaches.

Why SafeKeep uses 2FA

SafeKeep stores high-value, sensitive documents like legal records, wills, identification, financial data, and personal memories. Two-factor authentication is enforced to:

  • Block unauthorised access, even if someone knows your password
  • Keep personal and legacy data safe from prying eyes
  • Ensure your account is only accessed by you or your approved legacy contacts

All new accounts have 2FA activated using email verification by default.

How 2FA works in SafeKeep

At login:

  1. You enter your email address and password
  2. SafeKeep sends a one-time verification code to your registered email address
  3. You enter the code to complete login

This ensures your account can’t be accessed without both your credentials and your secure email access.

Choosing your preferred 2FA method

You can choose one 2FA method from the following options:

  • Email verification (default)
  • Mobile SMS codes (optional)
  • Authenticator app (e.g. Google Authenticator or Authy)

You can change your 2FA method in your Account settings, but only one method can be active at a time.

Example: If you enable an authenticator app, it will replace email or SMS verification as your 2FA method.

Your account recovery code

During onboarding, you’ll receive a recovery code, a single-use backup option if you lose access to your chosen 2FA method.

  • You must store this code securely
  • It can be used to recover access if your 2FA method is lost or unavailable
  • You can view or regenerate your recovery code in your Security settings

If you lose your recovery code, SafeKeep cannot restore access to your account.

Biometric login on the mobile app

You can also enable biometric login (such as Face ID or fingerprint) on the SafeKeep mobile app for quicker access.

  1. Log in normally using your email, password, and verification code
  2. Enable biometrics in App settings

Biometric login is optional and device-specific.

Security made simple

SafeKeep requires 2FA because your privacy matters. Whether you’re storing sensitive documents or setting up legacy access, your account is protected by strong security at every stage.
