What happens when I’m connected to another account
What you can see and do when connected as a legacy contact
If someone adds you as their legacy contact in SafeKeep, you won’t be able to see or access any of their account or documents until after they have passed away and an account takeover has been completed.
Before account takeover
While the person is alive, you won’t see any of their account details, files, or personal information. You will simply see your connection listed in the Connected users area of your account.
Nothing is shared with you until a verified takeover is approved.
After account takeover
Once you’ve submitted a valid request and it’s been reviewed and approved, you’ll gain view-only access to their SafeKeep account. You’ll then be able to:
- See all documents, messages, and legacy memories
- Share documents using SafeKeep’s secure sharing feature
- Choose to download the account data directly to your device
- Or merge the account data into your own SafeKeep account
- This will count toward your own storage quota
Important limitations
As a legacy contact, you cannot edit, or delete anything in the original account. You’re able to view and take action only through copying or downloading.
The original account remains locked for editing to protect its integrity after death.
After 90 days
Once access has been granted, you’ll have 90 days to download or merge any data. After this period, the original account and all of its data will be permanently deleted from SafeKeep’s system.
Being connected as a legacy contact means you’ve been trusted to carry forward someone’s important information with care and respect. SafeKeep gives you a clear, secure way to do that when the time comes.
