What recovery codes are and why they’re important

Understand the role of recovery codes in keeping your SafeKeep account accessible and secure

Recovery codes are a secure backup that give you a way to access your SafeKeep account if you lose access to your two-factor authentication (2FA) method. They’re a vital part of account security and should be saved somewhere safe when you first create your account.

What is a recovery code?

A recovery code is a unique, one-time code generated by SafeKeep during your onboarding process. It acts as your last resort to regain access to your account if you can’t use your 2FA method (for example, if you lose your phone or uninstall your authenticator app).

Each SafeKeep account is issued one recovery code. It is randomly generated, secure, and linked to your account alone.

Why are recovery codes important?

Your SafeKeep account protects some of your most sensitive and valuable information — wills, IDs, legal files, medical records, and legacy documents. If you ever lose access to your 2FA method, the only way to regain entry is by using your recovery code.

Without this code, SafeKeep cannot unlock or recover your account for you. For security reasons, our support team cannot bypass authentication or access user data on your behalf.

That’s why saving your recovery code is essential.
