When you’ll need to use your recovery code
Understand when and why your recovery code becomes essential for account access
Your SafeKeep recovery code is a one-time backup method that protects you if you lose access to your chosen two-factor authentication (2FA) method. It’s not something you’ll use every day, but in certain situations, it’s the only way to get back into your account.
When you’ll need your recovery code
You’ll be prompted to use your recovery code if:
- You’ve lost access to your 2FA device (such as your mobile phone or authenticator app)
- Your 2FA method is no longer working or has been deleted
- You’re locked out and cannot verify your identity through your email or 2FA
- You’ve changed devices and didn’t set up 2FA on your new one
In these cases, you can enter your recovery code in place of the usual 2FA prompt to verify your identity and regain access.
Why SafeKeep requires this method
For security and privacy reasons, SafeKeep support cannot override your login process or access your private documents. That means recovery through a verified code is the only way to safely restore access to your account without compromising its security.
